About Explain

Explain was developed as part of a project to improve communication between young people, their parents/carers and healthcare professionals in endocrine clinics. Explain was designed to help young people affected by various endocrine conditions talk with doctors and nurses, while also providing them with accessible information about those conditions. We worked with a group of young people, parents, doctors and nurses to develop Explain, recording 39 interviews in the process. We hope to add further endocrine conditions to the website in the future.

Explain is based on independent research funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) under its Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB) Programme (grant reference: PB-PG-1208-16102).

The views expressed are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the NHS, the NIHR or the Department of Health.

The website was developed by the COMMEND YOU study team (Helena Gleeson, Jennifer Downing, Peter Callery, Peter Clayton, Julian Davis, Paul Dimitri, Jerry Wales and Bridget Young) working with doctors and nurses at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, the Universities of Manchester, Sheffield and Liverpool, and young people living with endocrine conditions and their families.

It is now maintained by the British Society for Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes (BSPED)
